The tradition of eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday (as this feast day is otherwise known) was borne from the practical reason of using things up before the religious festival of Lent began.

In the weeks leading up to Easter, traditionally those who observed Lent would fast for 40 days. Shrove Tuesday was a chance to feast on all the things that wouldn’t survive this period of abstinence, such as milk, eggs, and butter. Of course, you add some flour into this mix and voilà – you have a delicious pancake!
